Sealyham Terrier

The characteristics of the Sealyham Terrier are similar to many other terrier breeds that are small and oblong. These dogs are well-balanced and have great substance. They are surprisingly powerful compared to their size.

Sealyham Terriers have black noses and square, powerful muzzles. Their eyes should be dark, well-set, and round. Pigmented dark eyes are preferred in the show ring. Their ears are carried on the side, next to the cheeks, and they have slightly rounded tips.

These dogs have an oblong shape and should have deep and wide chests. Their tails were traditionally docked, but when they have a full tail, it should be medium-long and thicker at the root.

Coat

Sealyham Terriers have a medium-long coat that is weather resistant. Their topcoat is hard, while the undercoat is soft and dense.  To prevent tangles and mats, you should brush your dog a few times a week.

Sealyham Terrier coat colors:

• white with lemon, tan, or badger markings

They will also need other basic care; brush their teeth at least three times a week. Check their ears for signs of infection and redness, bathe them regularly, and trim their nails if they don’t wear them down naturally.

Sealyham Terrier temperament

The Sealyham Terrier’s temperament is that of a typical terrier. They are confident, curious, and friendly. Unlike other terrier breeds, the Sealyham Terrier is a bit mellow and calmer. That makes these dogs a treat to be around, and they are suitable for new dog owners that might not have as much experience.

The Sealyham Terrier is a proud dog. They consider themselves equal family members, and they fully expect to be treated that way. They are outgoing and love to have fun. If a Sealyham Terrier gets bored, he will think of some way to entertain himself, and by doing that, they will entertain everyone around them.

Socialization and training

Sealyham Terrier’s training should start when it arrives at your home. They are great watchdogs that will bark at anything they might consider out of the ordinary, so it would be a great idea to teach your dog to stop barking on command.

They react best to positive training methods, and if you include loads of treats and food in your dog’s training, you will start noticing great results pretty fast.

However, Sealyham Terrier will not tolerate aggressive behavior towards them or even between other children and may stop their quarrel before it escalates.

Children should never be left alone with any dog, regardless of breed. You should make sure that your children understand how to approach dogs of this breed and understand how to interact and play with them properly.

Sealyham Terrier and other animals

These dogs can get along well with other dogs and can enjoy their company. Generally, the Sealyham Terrier is a great pet to have if you already have other pets at home. They are extremely friendly and love having company, so your Sealyham Terrier won’t mind other pets. 

However, every dog, no matter what breed they are, should be socialized and properly introduced to other pets. Take your time, and even if your dog doesn’t react well on your first try doesn’t mean they won’t get along.

Some dogs require time, but Sealyham Terriers are generally very affectionate and gentle towards other pets, especially if they were raised together.

Health problems

The Sealyham Terrier is generally considered a healthy breed, but they are prone to some health issues and concerns like any other dog breed. These dogs have an average lifespan of 12-14 years. 

When getting any breed, the breeder must show you the health tests that they have done for their breeding dogs. Dogs must be adequately tested because taking a chance and hoping that the puppy’s parents are healthy is a risk no one should ever take.
